bouldercroft
everyone said that I should worry about the heat more than the cold and you were all right... poor things - today I saw my first panting chickens as it hit 93f (34C) korma and mavis - we're panting on/off all day (my big girls were the most noticeably affected) lola - I swear she's too stupid to pant josie - she's too cool to be hot rita - she's too broody to worry about the heat she just wants to know why I keep taking the eggs away they enjoyed some crushed ice in their water trough and tomorrow I'll add more shade to their run I'll also buy them some yummy cool cucumbers tomorrow as a treat but they still enjoyed free-ranging and dust bathing despite the heat
Olly
We rarely see temperatures like that here, even in midsummer! Sounds as if you've got the right things to cool them down.
sadietoo
Bless them....it must be tough to be wearing a duvet in the middle of summer....their combs will look like Beatrice's Hat by the end of the summer According to the long term forecasters we are in the middle of a heatwave here... so naturally, it's a Bank Holiday Weekend and absolutely freezing! I'm guessing that the heat may not be a problem for my girls now until next summer
Ain't Nobody Here
Although I don't think I'd like it that hot, I'd be happy to see temperatures higher than 10C . Sounds like you're looking after your girls brilliantly .
bouldercroft
I woke to their alarm call at 6am this morning - never heard such a racket! I dashed outside to see what was going on and all the chipmunks were also chirping with their alarm. I'm guessing there was a nasty creature about. They seemed to appreciate seeing me as they all settled down again...
jennydavies
We have had very high temperatures for the past eight weeks now and it is currently 92 degrees in the shade (this temperature has been very frequent the past couple of weeks) I also "mist" our girls with the hose and they then go and find a nice cool place to sit. Last summer we quite often hit 100+ degrees, but they all fared well and we never had any heat casualties. I make sure they have plenty of water (I make sure they have at least a litre of water each per day) and daily salads from the fridge (lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes etc)
