Pink eggs from a speckledy?

Recommended Posts

Hi

We bought a speckledy about a month ago, she is really beautiful and started laying this week. Except her eggs are a shiny pinky colour! We were expecting a dark brown egg and were quite surprised by the presence of an almost pink one instead!

So, assuming that Speckledy's always lay brown eggs, what breed lays shiny pink ones?!

Well, I'm envious! My Speckledy lays brown freckled eggs. I don't know of a pink-egg layer but my Daisybelle (reverse Sussex) lays beige eggs which you could say had a pinky tinge - and they are smooth and shiny rather than the matt finish on other eggs.

Edited to add: MATT finish, not Mary! Darn autocorrect again ...

Speckeldy hybrids are a Marans hybrid, different strains of marans lay different shades of eggs, if the strain used is a good dark egg laying one then the hybrid has a chance of also laying dark eggs so it all depends on the breeding I'm afraid

Could it have been laid by one of the others though?

Sorry, not been around today. Bit of a manic BH weekend!

I doubt very much it's one of the others laying the strange pink egg, it *could* be Amber Too as she's a similar age to Spotty, but the others are well over a year old and their eggs are HUGE in comparison! Also, the two young ones are still in a separate house and they tend to lay in there rather than the main house.

It's very strange! I'll take a picture of said speckledy chicken and pinkey egg and post it up. I don't think I've ever seen an egg that colour before!

Thanks for the replies. Looks like we may have to get another chicken if we want brown eggs!

I have two speckaldy's and can confirm that they do lay with a pinkish bloom to them. Their eggs have varied in colour over the years (the eldest being over 5) from pinkish, light brown, dark brown and even creamy coloured. They have laid most days throughout their lives, except when being in the moult. And I think they are absolutely fantastic lovely birds and I never know what coloured egg I am going to get next!
