ashjc
Hi Had my chooks a couple of weeks now. In a classic with 2M run on wood chippings. Noticed that on hot sunny days that we are getting alot of flies on and around the poop. I am raking over this most nights but obviously during the day the chooks constantly poop. I wondered if there is anything I can do or use that will help allieviate the number of flies without harming the chickens? Or is it a case that this is just a drawback of having chickens contained within a smaller area? Any advice greatly received thanks Luckily we dont have too many hot sunny days in the UK! Mollie333
I use terracotta plant pots, turn them over and put on citronella oil on them, it will absorb in the sun and make flies less likely to come. Not my idea, i found it on here last year.
witzend
I was going to start a new thread but then thought I'd tag on!! Hemcore has citronella in - this is supposed to help with flies - anyone had any problems with chickens + citronella/thoughts?? x
chicken bark
I second the red top fly traps. I got a good deal on ebay last year. Just don't put them too near your house - they do reek when they are full of flies. It is good to get on top of fly problems any way you can as chickens can suffer from flystrike just like rabbits do.
ashjc
thanks guys for the quick response. searched on ebay for red trap. They look pretty big. Where do I position them. It looks too big for inside my run as I have the classic.... any advice would be great. Would it be effective positioned outside of the run? thanks

Ideally high up (above head height) and in sunlight.
