Is 5 ex-batts too many for an Eglu?

Recommended Posts

I have to admit these pictures have made me cry. How can mankind do this to animals? Anyway, thank goodness they have a loving home with you now... so lovely to see them dustbathing and enjoying freedom at last. :D I hink egg boxes should be like ciggarette packets, showing pictures of these poor creatures in this condition. Mind you would anyone care? :|

do you know what? even if the conditions you (we) rescuers give them do not meet the 'ideal' immediately - maybe they dont get the full sq.m per chook to freerange in, or there might be a queue for the nest box or whatever - whatever we give them has got to be better than what they came from hasnt it?

to feel the sun, scratch about, do chicken stuff - whether they have a long free life or a short one, it has to be worth it I think?

Oh bless their hearts  How lovely to see them dust bathing and getting a second chance. Well done you  I had some ex bats for a couple of days (looong story) before I passed them onto their new owners, I thought they looked bad but yours look awful. I hope you know that was not a criticism of you far from it

Sorry that the photos made you cry Poppy. I've actually had a much worse looking hen than Bernie. Scraggs we called her. She was what they call an 'oven ready' as she was practically featherless but she wasn't half fiesty and had the biggest appetite I've ever seen! It's so sad that they have to live in cages just so people don't have to pay a few extra pence for their eggs. They should ban all cages and imports from other countries. If the only option was free range then people would just have to accept the price or not eat eggs. Same should apply to chickens that we eat.

You're right, I think by law, they should put photos of what the hens look like on the egg boxes. I think a lot of people just don't know what their conditions are like as nearly every person I've spoken to didn't realise they had the space of just an A4 piece of paper or even that they were in cages. It also doesn't occur to a lot to check things like mayonaise, quiches, cakes etc to check the eggs in them are free range. Anyway, sorry for going on, I'll shut up now.

I forgot to ask, does anyone else have hens with food in their crops first thing in the morning? I wasn't sure if the reason a couple of mine aren't emptying is cos they're not getting enough sleep? I don't want to put them to bed earlierthan they want to go though as Pokey is still picking on them.

I'm new to this chuck stuff waiting for my classic had my babies since 5 days old in the house I'd say 5 in a classic if that's what were talking about is officially to many as it hold 4 but I'm also getting idea the batts are bald so would take up less space plus needs more bodies to stay warm . Like u said I'd worry that whY would happen to. The one that's left I don't think I could leave it behind.
