Roosting at night

Recommended Posts

I took the advice I found on here as my girls were sleeping on the coop floor and in the nestbox. So we've now been lifting them onto the roosting bars for 10 nights. They still haven't got the hint to go up there themselves - how long should we persevere for or should I just let them sleep where they want?

Sounds to me like you aren't going to win that fight

Are the roosting bars too high, maybe? Have you tried repositioning them? Maybe your ladies are just fussy! You could try blocking the nest box at night to keep them out, so they don't poop there then lay in it :vom:

Mine have been home for 2 weeks (tomorrow :) ) and they are still putting themselves to bed on top of the house every night, they even did it in the rain yesterday :!: I'm going out every night (just been) to put them to bed, they were then trying to sneak into the nest box so I block that up at bed time and unblock it in the morning when I let them out. They haven't started laying yet (only 18 weeks) so now I'm getting paranoid that I'm upsetting them and that they don't know the nest box even exists so they won't lay eggs  I really need to get a grip. Hope yours sort themselves out soon x

I have one that sleeps in the nest box two that happily roost in the coop and two that have taken to roosting on the roof of the coop! My neighbours must be having a right laugh watching me trying to get them to go in at night! I need two sets :lol: of hands!!
