face gear on a light sussex chick

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Can anyone advise me about the face gear on one of my light sussex chicks? Three out of the four chicks I have are light sussexs and they are now at the six weeks mark. The biggest one is almost certainly a boy. He has noticably larger and redder comb and wattles than the other two. One of the others I belive is a girl, she has a small and pale comb with no real wattles yet. It's the last one thats giving me problems. He/she has more comb than the girl and it is maybe slightly pinker. On that I would say girl however he/she also has pink/reddish begining of wattles which suggests boy. Neither his/her comb or wattles are a shade on his/her brothers though. I'm so confused!

Sadly I'm fairly certain chick number four is also a boy. He is meant to be a sultan bantum, but having looked for pics of the same I think he's actually a poland. This is based on him being buff/brown, not having feathery feet and only having four toes.

Any thoughts?

I will try to work out how to post some pictures.

The last one isnt a Sultan as you suspect, it may be a Houdan or Poland or a cross with one of those, it sounds nice :D

In any batch of youngsters one male will probably be more developed than others, remove him and the others will make themselves known quicker - obviously thats not practical in most cases, it wont be long before the males will be very obvious anyway

It worked! :D

He is very soppy when you pick him up compared to the others. I wish I could keep him but since I already have one boy I will have to rehome him if I can (unless he is very quiet and doesn't wind up my existing boy. It would be an excuse to get more girls  )

These are the Sussexs:

Hopefully at least one of them is a girl!

D'oh. That's what i was afraid of. So much for 'we think they're all girls' . Ahh well one out of four is better than zero.

Thanks (?) I'm afraid I can't tell you where they came from because I think they are older than I am. (Mum says they definitely are, they were my grandmother's  )

Thanks (?)

Dont worry it was a compliment, I added the smily as I wasnt meant to be looking at the curtains

Give the last chick a while longer, you may be pleasantly surprised. Sussex arent very easy to sex sometimes. I hatched some for a friend once and had to ring them with male and female leg rings as I was so unsure!
