kaza46
I am new to this whole chicken thing so please bare with me. I have a broody hen on eggs and when i lifted her to get her to eat, one of her eggs was still tucked up under her and it dropped. It has a lot of cracks in it but it hasn't leaked any fluid. I have taped it up with beathable tape but not sure if it will be ok, will it? Thats one question. Only another 2 to go lol. With the Eglu do the eggs get the right humidity or do i hav to mist the eggs? Someone told me to spray a fine mist over them. If i do have to mist them how often do i need to? Last question - I have put another egg under her today. Will she still look after that egg till it hatches even though its 10 days post the others? Hope someone can help me as i feel bad about the little chick
Egluntyne
I would jettison it myself, in case bacteria get in and cause the whole clutch to be affected.
Redwing
If the cracked egg is badly cracked then I'd remove it, you could try candling it to see if there is some life then make a decision from there I suppose, either leave it under her untaped or remove it, there is a high liklihood that it will go bad and risk the rest of the hatch Apart from anything if there is too much tape any chick wont be able to get out of the egg, some people have tried clear nail varnish with some sucess but really on very small cracks Once the original eggs hatch the broody will do one of two things, she will continue to sit on the last egg and her chicks will not be tended to as much as they should be as she will be reluctant to leave the nest or (and most likely) she will abandon the later egg - I'd remove that one personally The broody will provide the right humidity to hatch, dont mist the eggs as damp eggs could chill the broody and an excess of moisture will make things worse for the eggs - your instincts were right not to mist them
Kit
Kaza 46 Hi I did the same and the best thing to do is dispose of it properly. In future when lifting her out check under wings and between her legs to make sure there are no eggs tucked under her. I only misted when it was very hot and I did it during midday when the sun was the hottest. Good luck with the rest, mine are now 9days old and changing rapidly
coco
Personallly I would bin it. I had five eggs under my broody and found one of them cracked in the house, because of the risk of bacterial infection I removed it. In the end three hatched, good luck with your hatching. kaza46
Thanks everyone for responding to my questions. I am devistated its bad news but i think you are all right, the crack is far to big to worry about continuing with it. My first attempt and i did this, oh well i have learnt from my mistake. kaza46
Just a update - I went to take the egg out and she had broken it already. It wasn't developed so i feel better about it now.
