Hi everyone. Dont know if anyone can advise me but just over a month ago got two new girls from Wernlas to stop Ginger being lonely after Biscuit died before Christmas ( a rhode island red & a welbar ) . All settled and happy together, but a couple of weeks ago I noticed the Rhodie (millie) occasionally 'honking' like she had a cough ! (do chooks get coughs ?) That appears to have stopped but she now occasionally sounds like she's got a rattly chest ? She's not got a runny 'nose' or anything seems perfectly happy and very layed back.(she hasn't started laying yet.) Not sure whether to take her to the vet for a check up or carry on monitoring the situation ? The other two are fine , any ideas please.....

Possibly. It could be a respiratory infection, but if there are no other symptoms then it may not be.

 

I'd add something like Respite, Herban or Citricidil to their drinking water straight away, but if she starts getting any discharge from her eyes or nostrils, she will definitely need antibiotics from your vet.

Put your ear to her back and listen to her air sacs... can you hear bubbling or rattling? If you can, then she probably has a chest infection and will need the vet.

Thanks for the advice will have a listen - where can I buy the items you recommended Jools ? I dont have these , ive got chicken spice and apple cider vinegar.

That's where I've always got mine from before but I noticed that my regular feed supplier is now stocking a more extensive range of poultry products rather than just the farming basics!

 

Happy Chicks sell Herban & Citricidal and Hensforpets sell Respite.

 

I use Respite for cold-like symptoms and Herban for runny tums, though the blurb says it's good all round.

 

Hope it's nothing serious, but if she gets a discharge from her eyes or nose, she needs urgent antibiotics. If you're at all unsure, then take her to the vet who will probably prescribe precautionary antibiotics. Good luck
