dottychicken Posted June 26, 2011 Share Posted June 26, 2011 Hi, Poppy our Bluebelle recently started laying but decided it would be a good idea to lay an egg in the run. In doing so the other hens started pecking at her vent and quite badly wounded it. I took poppy to the vet and she has given me Baytril and some pain killers and advised me to keep the vent clean by bathing her daily. My question is about how the vent looks now. There appears to be a build up of greyish stuff around the opening and I'm not sure if this is a scab or poo or what! So basically what I want to know is should I be trying to clean this off or actually leave it to heal because it should be there? Here's a pic... I have here separated from the others in a run in the house, but am continuing to let her free range with them under strict supervision so they don''t forget about her! I've also taken her off layers pellets as she tried to lay yesterday and the egg got stuck, had to help it out gently myself. I've been feeding her lettuce, tomatoes, spaghetti, grapes, raisins and a little corn. Could anyone suggest anything else? Best, Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Plum Posted June 26, 2011 Share Posted June 26, 2011 Well done with the egg. I'd see if you can get some wheat. Pet shops may sell it. You could give her weetabix or rolled oats but watch out for salt content and don't forget grit. The Dogmother Posted June 27, 2011 Share Posted June 27, 2011 Looks to me as if she's had a slight pecking - I'd spray her bum with purple spray and keep an eye on her. An infestation of NFM can also cause scabbing around the vent as that's where they like to feed, but the area you show is too big for that. dottychicken Posted June 29, 2011 Author Share Posted June 29, 2011 Just a quick update... Vent is looking much better now, much less inflamed and lot more normal and pink. Still a bit scabby, but the scabs are starting to come away revealing healthy tissue underneath. I still have her isolated as the other hens are still more than a little interested in her vent when she poos, as she's still having to stick it out further and for longer in order to get all of her poo out.
