Best liner/ bedding for drop tray

Right, after months of deliberating I have decided on an eglu classic and standard run (for now). I intend to have 3 bantams as quite a small garden and a toddler. I am thinking a buff orpington and a Wyandotte. That leaves another choice. Would they live together ok and which other bantam breed would be a good choice?

Yes different breeds are happy living together - the only exception maybe Polands or any that have feathers that go over their eyes.

 

Most large fowl seem to have a bantam counterpart. If it is eggs you are after then a Leghorn would make a good choice. If it is friendly cuddliness then Pekins.

 

The choice is almost endless I'm afraid... hence morehens disease.

I have 4 bantams, a wyandotte, a serama, a naked neck and a little frizzle pekin. It is great being able to tell them apart .

 

As to which other breed you could get. Well, it is very much personal choice. I absolutely love naked necks and had to have one but I know lots of people who have yet to see their appeal! What about something which lays different coloured eggs such as an Araucana for blue eggs or a Maran for dark brown?

My 4 have been with me sine Friday night and get on fine - try and find someone who can supply them all at the same time/age rather than from different people. Mine are only 6-8 weeks old but they've all been living together - with others - for quite some time

I have a Poland and a Sablepoot and they get on fine. They wander around like a little married couple. The Sablepoot seems to 'look after' the Poland. This is my second Poland, they are very affectionate and chatter a great deal. Due to her feathers I think she only recognises my feet- she certainly knows them though

I have silkies and pekins happy together. The only thing I would say is bantam orps aren't that small, almost like a 'normal' chicken. Something to bare in mind perhaps.
