insuring hubbie to drive another car

Recommended Posts

Hi,

We are hoping to take my in laws away this summer. They have a very long drive from Devon to Scotland. So the plan is they drive to us in the midlands and then my husband drives their car up to Scotland. we want to make it as easy for them as possible as even the simplest thing stresses them out. So instead of them having to ring their insurance company to add OH to their policy I wondered if there was a way of insuring my husband to drive any car. Currently he is a named driver on my policy and drives a company car for work. Unless i change him to be principal driver on my car (which I can't do as the car is registered in my name) the insurance company says it can't be done.

There must be some way for us to take out insurance for him to drive any car. If not I will have to get my sister in laws to sort out the inlaws.

Any ideas? Thanks!

I am afraid the only way is to add your OH as a driver on to your in-laws policy as a vehicle can't be insured twice. If he had his own policy then he probably would have had the "driving other cars" extension which might be what you were thinking about but that gives third party only cover, ie no cover at all on the vehicle.

To drive any car, he will need to be fully comp.

It will say on the insurance certificate 'can drive any other vehicle with the owners permission'

The cover is only Third Party though which will be in the small print - catches a lot of people out as they think they have comp cover on the other vehicle
