Laying more than one egg a day

Recommended Posts

Hi, interested to get peoples opinions on this one.

I have had my 2 chickens about 5 weeks now at 21 weeks old and every day bar 1 day when I got just one egg I have had 2 eggs (both laying 1 a day)

However on two occasions beside the 1 each a day in the nesting box I have also found eggs that are broken which one of them has laid on the roosting bars, I think the shells are soft and they have fallen through the roosting bars and broken. One day last week in one day we had two eggs in the nesting box and two through the roosting bars.

Their egg shells are really nice and hard, infact harder than those we had from the supermarket. They have permanent access to grit.

Talking to others I realise we are getting a good egg yeild from our chickens but can someone just tell me I dont need to worry about the above, they arnt going into hyperdrive are they? Is it normal for chickens to lay 2 eggs in one day?

They are let out about 6.45am and go to bed around 9.45pm

thanks

Hi, when ever my chickens lay a soft egg, it is usually followed by at least 1 more softie, so I'd say it's perfectly normal :D Hopefully they've sorted themselves out now and you are getting 2 good eggs a day :D

They are on 17% protein layer pellets, they also have a handful of mixed corn in the afternoon, and then a treat of usually one of the following. Apples, sweetcorn, cooked pasta, cooked rice, and grass when they free range
