poorly hen .. any ideas ??? * Sad Update*

Recommended Posts

Hi my little Fudge is really under the weather ..

she is an ex bat and not laid for over a year now but has been happy and healthy ...i would think she is about 4 yrs old .

the last couple of days she has not been her self very quiet and has has runny poo quite yellow looking .. shes not running about but just sitting about looking sad with her tail down and all hunched up ... ive not changed her diet or anything and she is in a very large pen on grass as she has always been since i have had her .... is she coming to the end im so worried and upset about it .. she seems very weak i didnt think she was eating but felt her crop this morning and she has eaten a little today ...

if any one can give me any help i would be so grateful

If she's not her usual self, then there is something wrong, and your best bet may be to consult a vet. She could have a bacterial infection which could be treatable, or she could have peritonitis - is her abdomen swollen, or hard? A vet stands a better chance of diagnosing it, afraid it doesn't sound like something you could treat yourself.

I'm sad to say it, but four years old is a pretty good life for any hybrid hen, especially an ex-batt. Sound as if she has had some wonderful years of freedom.

thanks Olly ,

her abdomen is no more swollen than usual .. but you are right a vet will be able to let me know if she is treatable or not so i have booked an appointment this evening ...

i will let you know the out come

fingers crossed

well done Vikki for taking Ollies advice.

It is a good age for an exbat, but she could just have an infection that is treatable.

Jane Howarth has a 12 year old I believe or one that lasted to 12, though way back then they were probably better bred..

I know of a 6 year released girl too...

so there is hope too...

I sadly had a less than year released girl PTS only last night with a tumpour causing a blockage. A sad sad day for me.:cry:

What ever you are doing the right thing and have done a great job (big hug) and good luck at the vet. x

well back from the vet i was worried she wasnt even going to make the trip there ,,

she seems to think that she may have an infection but not 100% sure has given her some antibiotics and fluid she is in my bathroom now bless her ..see how she is in the morning ,,, if shes no better then she said to bring her back and the will put her in hospital and see what they can do for her ,,

wow 12 is a great age i really hope she makes it through i looked so silly sitting in the vets in tears with my little fudge on my lap i so love her xx

thanks for all you support xxx

RIP Fudge ........

well i am so upset ..the vet could hardly hear her heart but it was beating very fast, she seemed to think her gizzard had moved and there would be no way she would make it through an op so i sadly had do do what was best for Fudge and say goodbye

I've just caught up with this thread. I'm so sorry. We've all been there with an animal, not wanting to take that decision but taking it anyway because we know it's right for them..even if it's not right for us. Fudge was clearly loved to pieces, and you did everything you could for her. Sending hugsx
