Overreaction?

Recommended Posts

Late yesterday afternoon hubby noticed that Mimi had a big lump on her chest.

As I'd read on here about impacted crop it was what I suspected and it did feel big and hard. So, eldest daughter and I took on dosing her with warm olive oil - wasn't sure how much, how to administer it and would we have a willing patient. Anyway a small syringe left over from my not so pleasant days of liquid diet after jaw surgery, about a teaspoon of warm oil, two pairs of hands and the discovery that it was not so hard a job, manually opening a chicken's beak was easy and she didn''t peck in retaliation ... and the job was done. Thankfully I didn't choke her in the process which was my worry! Funnily enough there were no live maggots in the house to be had for the next part of the destined treatment!

This morning there is no sign of it - so was I being panicky and premature as a one month old chicken owner? Thinking back I gave them about three small spinach tops which would have had a stalk - is it best not to give them stalks on any veg? They don't eat long grass - it was mown only three days ago and the free ranging they do seems to be more an intent to gobble up any insect or worm they can find rather than going for the vegetation.

If it had been an impacted crop, she probably would have looked a bit miserable. Don't worry about it, we've had plenty of new owners panicking about the "lump" on their hen's chest only to be told it's their crop :) .

I give my girls shredded spring greens daily but always chop them up with scissors so there aren't any long bits. I don't think a few stalks would cause a problem though :) .
