when to separate mum from chicks?

Recommended Posts

My pekin chicks are almost 6 weeks old, and I am wondering when I should take their mum away and put her back with the other hens, she has started laying eggs again. Also, will I have to reintroduce her slowly back to the flock or just pop her in the coop one night and see how it goes?

my first batch of broody raised chicks this year were just 6 weeks old when 'mom' got bored with them with in 2 days she was back in with the main flock. she made the move herself the chicks were a bit miffed for a day or so but after that they were fine at night they just piled on top of each other

I have just put Mum back with the other hens, the chicks were nine weeks old and she was starting to chase them, I put her back in with the others ready to sperate them if needed but they were all fine togehter. I think I was probably lucky. :)

my chicks are 7 weeks & mum doesnt want to sleep with them anymore, but she's terrified of the other

hens now (they are much bigger than her) & prefers to be with the chicks but sleep in a coop on her own.

I want her to go back to the flock before our hols due to hensitting arrangements, things dont always

go to plan with these chooks!
