Chrissie218
Please help! I've just gone out into the garden to give my hens some treats, and noticed that one of them has a swollen tongue, but it looks all gelatinous if that makes sense. She looks very uncomfortable her tongue looks a bit big for her mouth. I picked her up and looked into her mouth. I tried to get whatever it was out of her mouth because it looked a bit like phlegm, but it's attached, or it's her actual tongue, I can't tell...and it hurt her so I've left her. Does anyone know what it could be? Could it be an allergy or a sting? I hope someone can help! Chris
foreveryoung
Id take her to the vet, if its that big she wont be able to eat nor drink, a couple of days of no food will result in death and poss a day without water..........
Egluntyne
I would wrap her in a towel and examine her thoroughly. if it is her tongue that is swollen, then I agree, she needs to see a vet. It may continue to swell and obstruct her airway.
Chrissie218
Thanks guys...It was too late by the time I saw her to take her to the vets (I was only there last week with one of my other girls, but they were fantastic with her, and followed up with a phone call to see how she was!) as it was after 7 last night, but she was eating and drinking before she went to bed, she just looked uncomfortable and couldn't quite close her beak. I panicked, because I feared it might be fatal if it carried on swelling, but she seems better today, I can't get near her, because she's very timid and she remembers last night when I picked her up and hurt her trying to look into her mouth! She's eating and drinking tonight and she's managed to get a slug down. Thanks for getting back to me. I've only had my girls since May, and I can't get over how supportive you all are when I panic. I'll keep an eye on her for a couple of days. Chris x
foreveryoung
Glad she seems to be doing well, just keep an eye on her. try sitting on the floor with some corn, throw a tiny amount in front of you and offer some on your Hans, they should start to come to you to get the food, if you do this regularly they should gradually begin to trust you and become less weary,,,,, emma x
