My chicks have cocci advice required please

Recommended Posts

I have just found 4 dead chicks in my growers pen (died overnight) and seen 1 have a bloody poo, My other half has just gone to buy some coxoid.

They have been on medicated crumb then medicated growers so wasn't expecting this. Do I have to feed them non medicated now they are going to have coxoid in the water or is it safe to still feed the medicated growers?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

You should feed non-medicated; apparently they can't cope with the 'double dose' of meds and coxoid is pretty strong for a youngster. You will need to be scrupulous about cleaning feeders/drinkers/housing but its a devil to get rid of really as the occysts live on the ground and can linger for a year. I would change the bedding/litter and do your best to move the chicks away from any other stock and not let anybody on the ground the chicks have been on. Also, see to the chicks last so there is less chance of trailing the occysts everywhere. Chicks should be on fresh ground anyway as they have less immunity to things older birds could shrug off. However, damp/warm weather is when the occysts multiply and thats exactly what we've been having in the past couple of weeks.

I have found that coxoid sometimes works and sometimes not. I'm afraid I cull any which do not respond after the 7 day treatment (you can do it for another week) but depending on their age/your views you could try the vet for something else.

You can't do both, it's one or the other.

You also need to thoroughly clean their quarters using something like Virkon S to kill the oocysts and keep it disinfected too.

Good luck in saving the others.

I would also suggest that you syringe some into each (AT CORRECT DILUTION) as often sick chooks just do not drink, you could also add a little to some food (wet mash).

There are different types of cocci that effect different parts of a hens system, also it reproduces itself at different rates dependent on it's strain, so success or failure of the medication will be effected by this AND how much if any that they consume.

good luck.
