salabbey
hi everyone, wonder if you could help? my two lovely girls are REALLY skinny. wormed for last 3 months with verm x. they seem fine in themselves, laying as usual, eating as usual, ~(thats just about everything!!!) but thier just a bag of bones? they live on my front garden, now mainly soil, but i move thier run approx every 4 weeks and i always rake the area they have been on to remove any poo. they visit my allotment where they have a grassy enclosure to play in, whenever possible. they dont mind the few minutes in the cat carriers. I try to feed them lots of greens, they love lettuce and pasta and fruit. they always have a supply of fresh water and pellets with mixed corn added. what am i doing wrong??? i'm worried that if they dont put some flesh on their bones soon the cold weather will kill them and i'd be devastated let alone my 2 boys who they really belong to. I'd be greatful for any help. thankyou. Edited July 22, 2011 by Guest
Chucky Mama
Hybrid hens that lay well are often skinny. Mine free range all day and had food ad lib. I have one bird who is very very greedy who is not too bad but the rest are like whippets - very thin. It is quite normal as all most their energy goes into egg production "fat hens don't lay". I would suggest that you worm them with Flubenvet which is UK's only licensed medicinal wormer 3 - 4 times a year. It is fine to give them a herbal supplement in between times. salabbey
Thanks for the advice I was getting really worried and yes they are like whippets!! and boy can they run when mealworms are on offer!!!! I will get some of that wormer and try the girls with that, having read lots of posts about worming I can see its the favourite one to use, thanks again
Plum
If they are out of condition their feathers would be dull. In winter they burn more energy to keep warm so you could give them a feed of wheat grain late afternoon to provide calories to prevent them losing heat overnight.
