So i went out to give all the chickens and bantams come bread as they do like the slice or two, any way the hen which i have looking after the chicks went a bit crazy and so i thought ill give her half a slice, i thought she would scoff it up herself but no, she carefully ripped the bread into tiny little bits so the chickes could eat it. It did make me proud.

 

However as they are only 11-6 days old should they beeating bread, also i give them a bit of corn as it encourages the chicks to scratch around for it.

Is this correct or should i stop giving them the treats for a bit.

I never give my hens bread, as it can swell in the crop and cause problems. Others do give it.

 

I wouldn't give it to the chicks however. Are they getting chick grit?

Try to stick to the chick crumb - it is specially formulated to give them the correct nutrition at this important time Mine are kept on grass so they get some greens and I use corn to lure Mum back in if I've let them out, so inevitably the chicks get some too, but its a rare treat, not a usual one. I agree it is a lovely sight though - a previously greedy Mum giving all the best bits to the chicks

My inlaws tell me every time they visit how much their hens love bread and ask if I give bread to mine ..... every time I say no (for the same reason as you) but they still ask again. Apparently (according to them) chickens also love prawn crackers, egg fried rice and noodles too

Ok, ill stop giving it too them, they will just have to wait till their all grown up.

The chicks dont have access to 'chick grit' (in actual fact i didnt no you could buy it) but they do have access to the mothers grit.

You can get chick grit from ebay. The adult hen's grit is a little too co"Ooops, word censored!", and they don't need the sort with bits of shell in it at this stage.

It is nice to see a Mother hen looking after her babies.

 

I used to soak marmite sandwiches and give them to my chickens as an occasional treat.

 

I have a mother hen who is very annoyed at missing out on treats at the moment as she has some 2 week old chicks. I'm sure she will make up for it in a few weeks time though.
