Stevie Adams
Patsy, our Gingernut Ranger, is probably about 22 weeks old now. She laid a few eggs a few weeks ago, then she had problems passing a soft shelled egg. She didn't look right for about two days, then I had to assist with getting the egg out. A few days later, her companion Eddie prolapsed and had to be put down. Since then she hasn't laid any eggs. We got a couple more two weeks ago so I can understand why she stopped laying. Anyway, about 10 minutes ago she started to look a bit depressed, he tail went down and she's just sitting in the garden. Could it be that she's about to lay an egg, or could it be something worse. I'm worrying as that's what she was like the couple of days before she had problems last time.
Olly
They normally take themselves into the nest box or somewhere dark and private (under a bush, say) - what you describe sounds more like a hen that is trying to lay a softie. Have you tried adding some limestone flour or Zocal or something to their feed to help with the shell production?
Stevie Adams
We've got crushed oyster shell that they do eat. I might leave her for a couple of hours and if she's not laid it I'll pop her in a bath of warm water. She liked that last time
Stevie Adams
I've just gone to clean out the Eglu and there was a broken egg in there which had fallen through the bars. I'm not sure if it was one of hers or if one of the new ones laid it, but I think they're still a bit too young. I only cleaned them out yesterday and hadn't noticed it this morning. I'm had a feel and she's definitely got an egg in her and it feels quite hard.
Stevie Adams
And another update: Patsy spent the day a bit down and obviously struggling but finally laid a perfect egg about an hour ago. She seems to have perked up a bit now. Maybe she's still trying to get the hang of this egg laying!

Stevie Adams
Well done Patsy, can i just asked how you assisted to get her egg out? thanks xx Well, it was quite easy with this one as she had a bit of shell hanging from her vent, so I just had to give it a bit of a pull and it came out.
