Had to buy eggs today!

Recommended Posts

For the first time in nearly two years I have had to buy eggs :(

I have one RIR who lays an egg religiously every day (with the occasional day off) weighing approx 80g.

I have one Black Sussex who was a brilliant layer but since she turned two she has started going through the Henapause and lays when she feels like it but goes in the nest daily to rest and read the paper (two hours of this!).

My third hen is also going through the Henapause I think, she often lays thin shelled eggs which break although she gets a lot of grit and oyster shell but is a very sporadic layer.

I generally have two eggs for breakfast most mornings so I have had to buy some :-(

We are suffering some Morehens disease which I am hoping to be cured over the bank holiday weekend :D Then hopefully I will get more eggs!

I still love em to bits though so can't be angry with them

We're down to on average three eggs a day, although having said that yesterdays was a bumper harvest of five  Most of my ladies are either old or broody. I contemplated adding a couple of hybrids to the flock but then decided to ride the storm and hatch out some Leghorns to do the job in time. But then while I was out today a Sussex hybrid pullet threw herself in my path so I hope to have eggs from her soon too  If Princess Michael of Kent (a broody Brahma) stops fidgeting, the Leghorns should hatch in 21 days time

I've been having to top up our eggs now for a few weeks. Kipper my little hybrid, is just over two and has gone through her henopause I think, we've had no eggs from her for some time now. Pansy, my lovely Light Sussex has been doing her best to help out bless her, but let's face it, she is a bit "too posh to push" every day, and so this week we had just the three eggs. I am waiting to install a new cube set up and as soon as this is in place, I will give in to my morehens. Griffin which path exactly were you on when that pullet ran across it? :D

I was in a garden centre, I wasn't even supposed to be going in, I was just collecting my mum! This naughty chicken had escaped from her run and was noseying about a long way away from where she should've been. I'll start a thread for her tomorrow
