Replace eggs under a broody with chicks?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys....

not been on here for a while... i've been a busy busy boy... just wanted to ask peoples thoughts on this...

We have a broody.. she has been broody for 4.5 weeks now, her eggs were due to hatch on sat/sun but have failed to do so. I didn't candle them so not sure if they were actually fertile.

I want to give them until wednesday but then really want her to come out of broodyness as she needs some sun, so I was wondering what peoples thoughts are on switching a couple with day old chicks? will this work if i do it in the evening when she is sleepy? And if not - what is the best way of taking her out of her broodyness?

many thanks

I did this last year and followed the instructions here to the letter. It worked like a dream. I think the letting her hear the chicks was an important part of the process, and I kept them in a box inside a cat carrier just outside the Eglu where she was nesting. I had them on a warmed snugglesafe.

Hi I have just done this & the chicks are now 4weeks old, strong & healthy. The Mum, a pekin, took to the chicks immediately and everything has gone perfectly. The lovely thing is that the chicks have been brought up within sight of the other hens & now f/r every afternoon with the older hens too. The older hens have been totally accepting of the chicks quite unlike introducing new hens. :D
