wooden WIR or omlet one - help me decide!

Recommended Posts

I currently have a cube with an extension and 7 chickens. They have omlet fencing outside this that they are in most of the day in a sloping shrub and tree area but they escape from this regularly so have put some temporary garden netting on top of this attached to the trees which looks awful! Have also had a few visits from an enormous fox early morning when they are in their cube run so am a bit concerned about the fenced area now. Thing is I have a very unhelpful OH (who still says he hates them after 4 years  ) and am useless at DIY so need an easy-ish option for a walk in run. I would really like someone to build in for me - does anyone have any ideas? I'm in Berkshire. Thanks :)

Personally, I would get a wooden one because they are a lot cheaper.

I have had 2 from bay animal housing. I got a handyman to put it together for me for £70. Bay will also make it with an opening in the side so that you can put your cube and run on the outside.

Hi Current

I am thinking about a WIR too and also have an OH who doesn't do DIY (and I'm not very good either) so I was going to save up for the Omlet one as I know I'll be able to put that together myself (perhaps with a friend to help hold things) but it is expensive. However, I figure that it should last and it appeals to me as can fix it down to our slightly sloping garden.

I did also think that the 1 metre extensions will be handy in the future but I will probably join the eglu and it's run to the WIR as other people have done.

Also, I am not sure but if you order the WIR and book an Omlet delivery will they put it up for you?

I am going thru the same decision so looking to see what replies you get! The wooden ones are cheaper but unless it looks perfect (on a sloping site so unlikely) it will bug me for years to come. So I am leaning towards the omlet run. I love that it can be easily (and quite cheaply for omlet) be extended and won't be needing a diy expert to put it up and make a decent go of it. :? sounds like I've made my mind up! I think they are less obtrusive too. It would be nice to hear from someone that has both but that is unlikely I suppose.

Trouble is I'll have to sell my (pink eglu) to justify the cost so no more chickies :?

Well thanks everyone - my OH decided for me in the end saying if we have to have one then the omlet WIR has a better resale value when we get rid of the chickens (some hope) and he would help me put that one up but not build a wooden one. So I've ordered it with an extension! Having palpitations about the cost but it will look better with the cube extension and less obtrusive in the garden hopefully.

Thanks for that great advice! Well it arrived today :D in 4 enormous boxes (that were all split with bits sticking out :( ) - the poor postie helped me carry them into the garden and he was sweating like mad poor thing! Will get it up as soon as possible. Will probably leave it on earth with wood chip bedding mixed in as we have found that to be fine in the cube run and they can dig about. Got some bushes to chop down 1st but it's raining. Any ideas for a mezzanine level anyone?
