Fluffy knickers have gone on 2 of my ladies

Recommended Posts

A couple of weeks ago two of my chooks lost their fluffy knickers, I'd gone away leaving them for the weekend with my husband, I don't know if it's related but he left them out in the run that night (they roost high up). I noticed the lack of feathers as soon as I got back.

They don't seem bothered by it at all, I've never seen any evidence of feather pecking from any of them - in fact they have all co-existed amazingly (they were all part of one flock). It's literally just a patch of feathers that have gone, from just below the vent (which is clear on both), going down to underneath their bodies. The skin is fine and feathers have started growing back on both birds now. However today I sat in the run for a good half an hour with them after they had been out for an hours free range to watch them. I'm not sure now if maybe they have lost more feathers since I fist noticed. The area below the vent has definite re-growth but the area underneath is still bare skin.

The other chicken is completely unaffected. One of those affected lays every day without fail, the other laid her first egg on the day I came back but hasn't laid another since. Any advice would be very gratefully received. I do worry about my babies! They all seem perfectly happy (although today I am paranoid two are underweight, but I'm pretty sure that's just me being silly). I can try and get some photos if it would help, but would love to know if anyone has had similar experiences.
