Sores on giant rabbit

Recommended Posts

I have a four year old giant rabbit that till recently had no health problems. Recently, we moved and she does not have the same amount of ground to run around on although she does spend a lot of the day on grass. She developed sores on her hind legs a few months ago and we took her to the vet who said it was common in larger rabbits and gave us antibiotics and cream. The sores healed but never regained any hair or looked completely normal. They are now back. We have recently been on holiday, so she wasn't out of her cage much over the period. We suspect that this time spent in her cage may have contributed to the return of the sores.

Does anyone have similar experience with this and how did they remedy it?

They sound like pressure sores and having no hair over that area will make her more likely to get them as she lacks cushioning. Keeping her on deep bedding will help. Having a couple of vet beds (1 to wash and 1 to use) may help ensure there is adequate cushioning. As ever with rabbits in this warm weather, adequate fly control around the sore areas is essential. F10 spray has the advantage of being an antiseptic and fly repellent.

Yes they are pressure sores. Thanks for replying. They only appeared back again after the spell in her cage because of holiday. Despite being well bedded, she does tend to shift it around leaving herself a hard floor(daft thing that she is) and of course has spent more time than usual in there. She normally is out all day on grass and finds herself comfy shaded spots. The last batch of antibiotic is still in date as is the cream so we are trying her out on this again with a view to going back to the vets in a few days if it doesn't improve.

Not doing too badly with flies this year. Horrible things.

By the way, does any one else freeze 2litre bottles(plastic) and put them into the cages with bunny on a hot day? Ours love it. Can't say I'd like to explain to the vet how come the tongue is stuck to the bottle though!
