Chickvic
We now have our and want to add 2 coloured egg layers to our 2 hybrids. We want birds that aren't flighty. I don't mind what colour eggs just not beige What would you recommend? If you have pics as well I'd like to see what they look like!
Cooks
how about a Coral lays cream eggs so less flighty than the White Star (white eggs) that it looks like. My coral was a lovely girl, called Sugar by my son, I wanted to call her Pearl which was his first suggestion
UKMARCH
My sussex reverse lays creamy coloured eggs not sure if they all do but hers are much lighter than our white sussex utility hens which is pale brown and she's a nice chunky shape too. HH HENS
Hi cream legbars are lovely little pure breed hens that lay a tinted blue egg very pretty chicken and a very reliable layer. There is also a hybrid of the cream legbar called Fenton Blue which is bigger than the legbar but not quite as pretty, she also lays blue or green tinted eggs though will occasionally lay a cream egg as she is a hybrid. Goosey Lucy
My vote is for a Welsummer. Fabulous deep brown eggs. And the birds are very placid, unlike my Araucana who although she lays a beautiful blue egg is completely freaky.
Benaberry
How about a Marans or one of the Marans based hybrids for a really dark brown egg. Also I think the proper Bluebelle hybrid (rather than just a blue-coloured hybrid) is meant to lay a dark brown/plum coloured egg. We used to have a cream legbar (blue eggs), and she was absolutely gorgeous. Bit mental (as in if there was something unusual going on, like a chicken on the washing line/on top of the house, you could guarantee it was Delilah), but also very tame and friendly after lots of handling (mealworms ), always first in the queue for treats, and would sit on your shoulder or happily be picked up for a cuddle - loved having her comb and throat stroked. She was also a very pretty bird as HH Hens mentioned above:
