Sexing Silkies... Am I right?

Recommended Posts

Sexing silkies.... It's a nightmare

They are now 18 weeks old...

The first 3 are of Beverley which until this weekend, I was pretty sure she was a girl, her head still looks girl like but her tail as become more boyish

The last 3 are Sue, who I still maintain is a boy, but yet no reddening on his comb and wattles, no sign of spurs yet and no sign of crowing

So, do you think im right at girl/boy... Am I unlucky and have boy/boy.... Or (she says clutching at straws) could I have 2 girls?

Note on the last picture of Sue, you can see his weird clawed toe 8)

Hee hee, just realised I'm wearing my Omlet fleece

Silkies are usually fairly easy, some boys can be sexed at four weeks because of their comb, but my gold boy did take a bit longer than usual to show his true colours. Check for streamers in the hair do. From time to time I'll hatch a Silkie that keeps me guessing for a while and they usually turn into boys, infact I'd say at least 80% of the Silkies I hatch are boys

I'm a glutton for punishment and have another lot of Silkie eggs on the go  Day 2 so a long wait yet!
