Holidays with a dog - any ideas ?

Recommended Posts

I wonder if anyone can help as I know there are lots of dog owners here ?

My OH and I have a dog who has reached an age where we really don't want to put her in kennels and have had many great holidays with her, especially in Cornwall where we can surf/bodyboard etc. However, we feel in need of a change (especially as the weather doesn't look too promising for the beach in September).

She is fine to be left for a few hours in the cottage/flat if the holiday company allows it so we can go out. My OH likes to be active and I was wondering if anyone knew of somewhere we could go river kayaking (easy, not white-water) or with trails he could run on etc which is dog friendly.

Thanks, any ideas very welcome.

Our dog comes with us on all of our UK based holidays. I generally do a cottage search on one of the many websites out there and I just tick the dog accepted filter. Most will specify that the dog must not be left in the cottage alone in case they shred the place. We usually take our dog out with us as don't holiday in the UK during the summer and we take a cage with us if we think that it will be too warm to leave her in the car so that she can be left in the cottage without breaking the rules.

I do the same and have a whole host of places that we've stayed and are very dog-friendly. I don't leave my two in the cottage alone, but some places have outdoor kennels which you can use if you need to leave them.

A quick internet search will throw up endless possibilities and there are specific sites devoted to the subject.

Try this section on a lurcher forum - it's always helpful

We had a fantastic holiday here http://www.lurcherholidaychalet.com/ at the beginning of the year. It was perfect for dogs and even had a dog room to leave your dog in to dry off after the beach or if you wanted to nip out for a meal in the evening. The beach is 20ft from the front door and there are miles of country walks without getting into the car. There's even a country park with a dog swimming area just 15 minutes walk away.
