Weeks of runny poo but hens look healthy

Recommended Posts

I have had advice via the forum about runny poo, but despite the porridge, yoghurt etc the situation is getting worse. The three 'girls' have bright combs, and eyes, and are running about the garden doing their own thing, having dust baths, finding grubs etc. and two of them are still laying. However, one of them is very thin, with a boney breast and another doesn't seem quite so plump as usual.

I am getting increasingly worried as the droppings are now either liquid white or liquid black. I have suspected for a long time that they may have coccidiosis but hesitate to take them to the vets again, as twice in the past they have been checked and no treatment given - one actually did a normal poo in the surgery, just to make me look like a fussy 'mum',( which, I must confess, I am.)

What on earth can I do when they look so healthy and everyone thinks I'm fussing!!

If you are worried about cocci I would suggest that you take a sample along to the vets for analysis. Many vets have in house labs and so can check for worm eggs and cocci. If not they can send them away for you. In the meantime you could give some probiotic powders such as Avipro or Protexin Soluble in water. Laying hens do tend to be rather thin so I wouldn't worry too much about that. I would consider Flubenvet worming but if you are popping a sample into the vets I would wait for the results before starting.

I would be worried too and, if you think they are losing weight, I would go back to the vet.

What are you feeding them on? Have you tried adding Bokashi to their food, it is supposed to firm up the poos? My vet, an avian specialist, is very keen on Beryl's Friendly Bacteria for chooks with digestive problems. It worked very well with one of my girls, when food was passing through her system undigested and she was losing weight etc. she is now fully recovered.

However, I think you should refer to your vet again, and tell him/ her your concerns re cocci. You could alternatively send a poo sample to Retfords for testing, or take one in to your vet if they can provide that service.

Good luck.

Mine had/have liquid white poo which has been diagnosed as possible Brachyspira from wild birds. I have given up trying to treat it after 6 courses of antibiotics. It does not seem to bother them or cause any other problems, as far as I can tell. Like yours, they are all super lively and eating/laying well.

Sending a sample to Retfords would probably give you some answers.
