yesterday i noticed that my hen had a red mass hanging from her vent so separated her from the others and researched what the problem could be and found it to be a prolapsed oviduct.

 

so this morning i have cleaned her up as best as possible and then tried to push it back in. it will go back in and the hen is quite happy about it and not in any discomfort but it keeps coming out again when she has a poo. so she is still in isolation and still has a prolapse. i dont want to leave her like this though as it now is dripping clear liquid.

 

is there anything else i can do? will it sort itself out given time? or is this the end of the road for my chicken?

 

any information/advice greatly recieved

There is advice here on dealing with a prolapse.

 

I managed to "cure" a prolapse earlier this year. I sprinkled sugar on the prolapse (meant to help shrink it) and with haemorrhoid cream and latex gloves pushed it back in and held my hand over her vent for as long as I could. I had to keep doing this as it kept popping out but eventually it stayed in. I kept her indoors away from the others.

One of my ex batts had a prolapse last Monday - the vet pushed it back in and then stitched it with a purse-string stitch, I think it was called. The stitch was removed 24 hours later and, so far, it has been fine. She is pooing without any problem, but hasn't yet laid an egg which will be the acid test.

As Egluntyne says, if you can't get it to stay in I would take her to the vet tomorrow.

i'll give it another few goes then. it does look like one side has gone in but there is still stuff hanging out on the other.

You need to get the swelling down before it will stay in. I found sugar took it down quite quickly but haemorrhoid cream does as well by constricting the blood vessels. The fluid she drips is from irritation she may have an infection in the oviduct that made her prolapse so a trip to the vet is a good idea even if it goes back. One of mine took over a week to go back and then went on to lay daily, so it can work.

 

It helps it to heal if you can deter her from laying by darkening the run and keeping her off layers. You may find she lays tomorrow though because she'll have already ovulated.
