Great eggscape
We have just got our classic along with Milly and Molly, the people we had ear marked for holiday cover have now got their own chickens so we don't feel we can ask them now. We are going away for 2 weeks and wondered if we could safely leave the chickens out at night? We can have someone come everyday to feed and water them but not am and pm. laurmurf
if you mean can you leave them living in the eglu and run for two weeks with someone checking their food and water than - YES! the door doesn't need to be shut each night, the run is secure and they can get up and go to bed when they want. emmastar
I have left mine in the walk in run overnight but i forgot to shut it up . I dont think i would be happy leaving them for 2 weeks and someone just feeding mine as i would be woried they would miss is something was wrong with one , Im luckey and have a sitter in my house while i go away for 2 weeks each year as i have 2 dogs 2 cats and 9 hens pluss fish no way would i try to load them all off to diferent people again
Redwing
Yes they can stay in the run and not be shut in the Eglu itself over night BUT check the run thoroughly for gaps and weaknesses, reinforce with cable ties if necessary and check that the skirt is flat and weight/peg down if needed Ensure that the person who feeds them knows how to properly secure the eggport and run doors, I know its not rocket science but my husband gets the run door wrong every now and again
Cooks
i would leave mine for a couple of weeks with the neighbour popping in to feed and water, they have ample space in my wir and he has chickens himself so i totally trust him. i would never leave them totallt on their own even for a day, i wouldnt rest if i didnt kow someone was checking in on them and giving them their treats etc.
chestnutmare
I'd still have someone to check on them. What if they knocked their water over? Are they laying? - What about collecting eggs?
Olly
As said above, make sure the run clips are all done up, that the skirt is weighted down with a plant pot or two, and that your chicken-sitter knows how to close the run door and the eggport. I never used to close the Eglu door when I had a Classic with attached run. As long as they've got food and water, and the eggs are collected, they should be fine. Great eggscape
Thanks guys, I can have a neighbour come everyday and my parents can come to clean them out once a week. I feel better now. Are your egg ports a bit loose it wobbles quite a bit when locked?
Cooks
yes mine is on my eglu
Olly
Yes, they all wobble a bit. Teach your neighbour to give it a good tug once it's closed, and if it's locked properly then it will stay in place.
