Great eggscape

Can you really leave chickens in the run overnight?

Recommended Posts

We have just got our classic along with Milly and Molly, the people we had ear marked for holiday cover have now got their own chickens so we don't feel we can ask them now.

We are going away for 2 weeks and wondered if we could safely leave the chickens out at night? We can have someone come everyday to feed and water them but not am and pm.

Yes they can stay in the run and not be shut in the Eglu itself over night

BUT

check the run thoroughly for gaps and weaknesses, reinforce with cable ties if necessary and check that the skirt is flat and weight/peg down if needed

Ensure that the person who feeds them knows how to properly secure the eggport and run doors, I know its not rocket science but my husband gets the run door wrong every now and again

i would leave mine for a couple of weeks with the neighbour popping in to feed and water, they have ample space in my wir and he has chickens himself so i totally trust him.

i would never leave them totallt on their own even for a day, i wouldnt rest if i didnt kow someone was checking in on them and giving them their treats etc.

As said above, make sure the run clips are all done up, that the skirt is weighted down with a plant pot or two, and that your chicken-sitter knows how to close the run door and the eggport. I never used to close the Eglu door when I had a Classic with attached run. As long as they've got food and water, and the eggs are collected, they should be fine.
