Hello all!

I was just wondering if corn is the best late afternoon (winter) treat for the chucks (I gather there's not much nutrition in it?) or would sunflower seeds be better (and should they be the sunflower hearts without the "shells"?)

Hi we give our chickens a mix of corn and sunflower seeds in the afternoon and they seem to like them fine but dont always eat the sunflower seeds.

Some wont eat sunflower seeds with the husk on although mine will quite happily

 

I've never met a chook that wont eat the seed hearts though

I give my girls corn and they enjoy it but usually leave some on the grass (the wild birds must eat it up 'cos its not there the next day !). Just recently I thought I would try sunflower hearts (seeds without the husks) because I wasn't sure if they could have them whole, and they go bananas for them and don't leave any for their wild friends

Thanks guys, that's why I was asking, really, my girls LOVE sunflower hearts just as much as corn, i was just wondering if one was better for them than the other, if it makes no difference, I'll carry on giving them both!!!

Mine like both. I alternate in the winter but give only sunflower seeds in the summer (I think corn is too heating).
