Hen feeling the cold???

Recommended Posts

I have 9 girls,a mix of ex BH,some rescued bluebells & a 4 year old Omlet hen(Miss Pepperpot),she is the ruler of the roost and is generally very lively, alert & bossy!!

She has no signs of illness at all,& I am fairly experienced with different chicken afflictions, but today she has stayed in the nest box all day, when I got her out she just stood there, she appreciated a cuddle then went back up the cube steps. This is totally out of her nature & I am worried as I love her to bits.

Do you think she could be feeling the cold? The weather change here has been dramatic, from boiling hot to very nippy very quickly.Or could old age be creeping up on her??As I said before no visual signs of illness.

HELP!!! :(:(

Hens don't generally mind cold weather - I doubt if it's that.

Is she eating, running for treats, generally looking bright? If not, I would suspect that she's feeling under the weather, and keep a very close eye out for any other symptoms; hens can hide illness very successfully.

Tea time treat of corn was ignored :( Just had her in the house & we have been cuddling for half an hour, she lay her head on my shoulder & closed her eyes :(

Have dosed her with a small amount of Baytril, put her back in the nest box & will keep a close eye on her.

I know you shouldn't have favourites,as I love all my girls but she's such a lovely lady :cry:

Awww hope she's back to normal soon. Know what your going through as Sprocket is under the weather too (currently in the indoor cage in the lounge) & Dixie has had a sore bum (put down to being a newbie layer) poor love. You can't help but worry. Lots of get well wishes to you lady.

Daphne was a bit reluctant to come out of the cube this morning(can't blame her really, weather is awful here),she ventured down the steps & had alittle peck of some leftover corn on the cob, fromlast nights tea.But she is still under the weather :( ,will dose her with more Baytril today.

Toying with taking her to the vets but even though our vets serve quite a large, rural area they just seem to prescribe Baytril.

I hope she starts feeling better today, keep your fingers crossed all!!!
