Claiming Back Tax For Work Uniform Washing

Recommended Posts

In today's Sunday Mirror Martin Lewis has some money saving tips. One of them is to claim back tax if you wear a uniform for work and launder it at home. You can claim between £12 and £56 a year and back claim up to six years. You can claim for a Polo shirt or a full uniform eg. Nurses uniform.

I went on the HMRC website as suggested in the article but I can't find any more information about this. Has any one claimed for uniform washing or does any one work at the Tax office and could give me some more information about this?

OH, DS and myself work in the food industry and have to have clean uniform everyday which I wash at home. Even a little refund each would be nice :D

Not wishing to put a dampner on things and sorry but I feel I must mention this, the time limit for "going back" is now only four years not six. £60 relief is equivalent to a refund of £12 for a basic rate taxpayer . You are likely to spend this on telephone calls waiting for the Revenue to answer their helpline, and they will almost certainly want you to claim in writing :( . If there is a Revenue Enquiry Office close to you..I would make that my first port of call.

They were on about this at work last year and I had totally forgotten about it until I had the Money Saving Expert email last week. I sent a letter off Thursday, can't hurt for the price of a stamp. :)

Here's a link to the guide on MSE, LINK, it's quite far down the page just after Reclaim, Reclaim, Reclaim, also search the MSE forum, there are some example letters etc.

Good luck :D
