AlisonH
Was watching the 2 chooks FR this morning when they started up a right racket. Went out and a hawk like bird - I'm not very good at distinguishing birds of prey - shot up out of the garden. It's been circling now for the past hour so rather than leave the chooks unguarded I've had to put them in while I get on. This is worrying because I can't watch them all the time but don't want to constrict them to their run . Is this bird likely to attack them and if so is there anything I can do to persuade it away from our garden?
Sammiboo
was it big bird? we get buzzards around here. if it darted out of your garden it may have been a sparrowhawk. your chickens should be fine unless you have chicks or very small breeds. Sparrowhawks go for garden birds and pigeons. we get sparrowhawks and buzzards buzzard usually sparrowhawks dive at great speed into your garden, buzzards circle. we have lots of buzzards here and my chickens have been fine! LolaLayla
We have sparrow hawks here and I noticed the girls were agitated the other day by its presence in the garden. Although they were annoyed they did not hide and it took no interest in them. It swooped down and went off with something possibly a mouse or small bird. In saying that it was a small hawk so possibly a male.
AlisonH
From the pictures it was probably a sparrowhawk - when I say circling it was landing on roofs and up in trees then swooping down towards our garden. Thanks, your comments have started to reassure me that Lottie and Charlie are probably safe.
