Luvachicken
When I first got my chickens, 2 and a half years ago, I bought Barrier Animal Healthcare Red Mite Powder - which lasts for 6 weeks and smells lovely. That is all I've ever used, and my girls seem ok. But, I read someone elses post about mites and the fact it should contain prmethrine ( sorry, can't remember exact spelling - isn't that also the stuff which kills headlice in humans ? ) My powder doesn't seem to contain this stuff but it does contain something called CITRAL. Have I been doing the wrong thing all this time ? I did see in a pet shop some Nettex Red Mite Killer that you seem to wash the house with - is that what I should have been doing all this time ? Should I be buying that instead ? I feel guilty for not knowing what I should be doing by now
Tweety
I think what you have been doing is fine. I use either the Barrier powder or Diatomaceous Earth, and Poultry Shield to wash out the eglu. I have had a couple of mild red mite infestations during the 4 years that I have had my chooks, but have dealt with them successfully using these products. If your girls are ok, and are not suffering from red mite on a regular basis, I wouldn't worry.
Lewis
The Barrier one smells nice but (IMO) isn't the best product to use. If its been working then maybe use it all up and then get some Diatom or Total Mite Kill powder/Buz Busters, something with Permethrin in it. Total Mite Kill spray is good if you have an infestation and works out cheaper to get the concentrate and mix it up yourself!
Luvachicken
Thank you both of you, I think i will get some of that Total Mite Killer. I don't like to think of those itchy scratchy bugs on my girls, even though I've never seen one.....yet.
