lindafw
I bought 3 different hybrids recently (as some of you know) but one is puzzling me soooooo..................what is the breeding difference there is between a light Sussex (pure breed I assume) and a light Sussex ranger..the hybrid I purchased? Does anyone know
Redwing
A light Sussex is a pure breed you are correct A Sussex ranger/Sussex star is a Rhode Island Red x Light Sussex hybrid Many are actually totally misleadingly sold as light Sussex - if I had a £1 for every time I've seen one on a forum and the person said they bought a Light Sussex I'd be a rich lady
lindafw
They do look very similar in colouring...but the body shape is a little different to my pure breed Buff sussex...but then Gladys is 18months where as this newbie it about 20 weeks. Hope she starts laying soon! I also got an amber star...which I had heard of and a blue ranger who is a beautiful dark blue grey. These girls are int ended to provide me with eggs when my pure breeds are on strike
jimnpaula
I've often wondered if we could make a list of all the hybrid names and their pure breed lineage.... Out of interest, do hybrids breed 'true' or are they always a first generation crossbreed from two pure breeds? P
lindafw
I read somewhere that they don't breed true...but what you get I don't know
Redwing
hybrids dont breed true, they are always a first cross Someone on another forum did once make a list of the hybrids, their popular names and what breeds went in to them but I cant find it

Snowy
A couple of years ago I compiled a list of all the different hybrids and what breeds went into them. If any one wants a copy, PM me with your email addess and I'll send it to you. It may not be 100% accurate, but it was information I gleaned from trawling various web sites and poultry books. lindafw
Snowy perhaps that was the list Redwing couldn't find...if you put it up would the moderators save it somewhere so we have access...I am sure many of us would be interested
Snowy
I wonder if it could be saved as an image, I know ANH did something similar with the egg sizes chart I'll have a think.
memphisto
We were sold our Sussex as a 'Light Sussex' but in reality, I'm sure she's a Sussex ranger, although she's my only sussex, so I refer to her as our Sussex! She's a lovely girl if a bit highly strung at the moment!
