Recommended Posts

Hello all i have 4 silkies

Mop is laying well she gives me an egg a day im woried is this to much for her ?? can it cause her problems i thought her being a silkie i would get an egg every few days in the summer months not one each day all year

cookie i got a few months with her daughter topaz , i was told she was about 18 months old but as of yet i have not seen an egg from her ?? i dont mind if she never lays shes my sons pet hen but is this not odd ?? Could the guy not be telling me the truth about her age as shes past laying ? her daughter topaz has grown up quick and is a happy girl still only a few months old now though ,

Fransis is now 6 months old should i start to see if shes a she or he ?? and how do i do it ?

Also one of my frizzle pekings has started to crow ?? they are 5 months old and sold as girls both looking very girley up untill the last week or so one has turned bright red and is louder than normal :wall: ill try get some pics up asap

Mop will be fine, Silkies are pretty good layers, she will get her rest by spending most of next summer broody I expect  in seriousness she may well not lay all winter

Fransis should be able to be sexed now, the sexing of Silkies is pretty much based on the comb size and hairdo shape so if you have any pics post them

If Cookie raised Topaz then she wont have laid while she is raising a chick, she should moult after being broody then will come in to lay so with the chick and the moulting she will probably not lay now till next spring

pekins are dead easy to sex, post some pics and quite a few people on here will be able to tell you instantly, sometimes you do get females that crow but they are normally the leader of the pecking order

At 20 weeks I'd be expecting the Pekins to be crowing.... They are not good examples by the look of them... The tails look almost Japanese bantam like :anxious: but based on their age, and their combs and wattles and the colour of them, I'd say girls... Although the tails are a mystery and would make me think boyish if it wasn't for the age and lack of crowing :?

They have always had that very upright tail and 2 other people who have been round said " i like your japanese bantams " ??? i got them for the kids as they wanted friendley small hens and these two fit the bill perfect they have always been so tame from the minute they arived and still are easy to manage .

There have been the odd noise but nothing the others havent had a go at .

Ill get a few more pics in a mo after i get the kids from school .

thanls for all the help :D

The Frizzle is a rather lovely pure breed, they have non feathery bright yellow legs, yours look like they have some feathers on their legs which made me think Pekin cross Frizzle, if they have clean non feathery legs they may be pure

frizzle has become a general description for anything with curved feathers which confuses things, Pekins, Polands, Japanese, Cochins, Silkies can all have frizzle feathers but shouldnt be described as Frizzle

(if that makes any sense! - its late  )

The fact they have gone flat feathered could be the dustbathing I guess, it almost looks like they have got wet though  Are they back to being frizzled now?

I have a frizzled cochin she is as mad as a hatter. She charges around the garden and chest barges the others (not the pekins though they won't stand for her nonsense despite the fact she is huge compared to them  )

:mrgreen::mrgreen: would you point me in the direction of where you got her ?? and i love my evie :D shes a huge ball of friendley fluff but dose get a bit of stick from the micro jelly and bean .

I agree that they are probably pure breed Frizzles crossed with Pekin. They look very similar to the pure breed bantam Frizzle I hatched in April, apart from the feathered legs. The tail is exactly the same too.

As for why their feathers stopped being frizzled for a time, I have only seen this on mine if they have been out in the rain. The feathers returned to normal once they were dry.
