chocolateeclaire
Hi My partner is worried about a swelling above Miss Marples eye. It doesnt look too bad to me but he says it feels hard and when he looked online (not on omlet) loads of info came up including it being something that could spread through the whole flock!! Do I need to worry??? Thanks -Claire
Snowy
May be worth posting a photo - someone may recognise it? Otherwise, if you have concerns about it spreading to the rest of the flock, a visit to a vet would be in order. They would be able to allay your fears, or advise on treatment. squidsin
I was about to post about this - one of my bantams has it. It's an infection passed on through wild bird droppings, it's highly infectious and killed one of my girls - think it's called mycoplasma. To be fair though, she lived a year longer than the vet predicted, so it's not as bad as it sounds. It was treated with Baytril but not very successfully. Not sure what to do as last time I took her to a specialist avian vet and it was insanely expensive - just can't afford that right now. I'm on unpaid maternity leave! Any advice? Pleeeease. The Dogmother
Swelling around the eye could be an indicator of any number of things, one of those is Mycoplasma. It isn't necessarily anything infectious, but without any other information I'd recommend that you take the bird to the vet (as Snowy's suggested) to get her looked at. squidsin
The vet didn't seem sure of what the swelling is - it's hard, so not an abscess, he thought maybe a tumour - but I am sure it's mycoplasma. Seems to be responding to Baytril though and she's perked up after three days on antibiotics so fingers crossed. I am treating the unaffected one as well to be on the safe side.
