jackian
I have just come back from a 10 day holiday today and spent a high percentage of it thinking about my girls i had left behind with a minder . ... OH mentioned it was 5 hours into the holiday before they were mentioned ,I really had to restrain myself It was not me it was him I learnt a few lessons.. Have a back up. I left the next door neighbour to look after them , he works in a pet shop and has a few pets. I thought he would be ideal. I left a laminated list of does and don'ts especcially the bit about the fact that they sleep in the nest box and the poo needs to be scooped out every day.although he did a reasonable job it was a good job that after 5 days away i had a back up My daughter went up there and texted me to ask..Should the nest box be black inside She then with him doing half his bit did the rest and went up every day , sometimes twice.. They have been spoilt rotten with sweet corn , tuna , milk , a whole tub of mealworms . Then there was a storm , I have come back with half the roof off the WIR to be sorted at the weekend . It was the first time away from the girls ,the holiday arranged before we had them.Even my OH who loves them but not as involved as me says " maybe 10 days is too long , maybe we should have 2 really short breaks 5 days each maybe I can't wait to see them in the morning ...Did they miss me They better had . Ain't Nobody Here
At least they survived the storm . I bet they look at you tomorrow as if to say "have you been away, we never noticed?" . Hope they don't turn up their beaks at what you offer now .

Barkisland
I think you just have to accept that anyone else is not going to perform to your own exacting standards when looking after your girls. The first couple of times we went away I did worry a lot about what was happening at home. I'm extremely lucky to have willing neighbours who will look after mine for me, but they don't clean up the poo as efficiently as I do - and why would they? The main incentive for them is collecting the eggs, and they make no bones about it, but I am still very grateful, as without their help I could not go away at all. My girls are just as happy being a bit muckier for a couple of weeks. As long as they have food &water, and are locked safely away at night they will be ok. Once you have got your head around this, you'll be able to enjoy your holidays better. I used to worry about the cat too, but we found a really good cattery locally, (which is half the price of the one we used to use ), so now I feel totally relaxed and happy and barely give them a thought when I'm away! craftyhunnypie
No one will ever do them as good as yourself! Although once upon a time when I just had my 3 original Omlet girls & a beautiful pink eglu.. (when was that??), there were the most perfect chicken sitters. They came morning & night to let them out & shut them in, they were kept spotlessly clean, they were spoilt with sweetcorn & the sitters even sat out watching them in their spare time. I have never had anyone as good as them. They were older ( in their 60's), so perhaps this is the answer - someone more mature? We had a 12 year old, who as she grew older , didn't want to get poo down her acrylic nails & just neglected the chickens a bit. I provided gloves, but her parents took over the job. Wasn't impressed when we came home to red mites during a holiday away in June when weather back here was scorching! Very very hard to find a great chicken sitter I'm afraid.
