Griffin
Molly had asked for a sewing machine for her birthday in March, and had been given an Argos voucher for Christmas, so yesterday I put the extra money towards a Bush sewing machine that was half price in their sale. Well it seems silly to put it away until March so we've been busy learning how to use it She's been using sewing machines at school but I have never sewn using one at all, that was always my mums job on her ancient Singer that is about 45 years old. The only fabric shop I know of for miles around here is Hobbycraft which is ridiculously expensive. Apart from Ebay, is there anywhere else online that sells reasonably priced cotton fabric? Molly is planning on making clothes. I'm going to make bunting and other silly pretty things
Plum
err whose sewing machine ebay is probably a good place to look for fabric, the online shops are normal prices.

Snowy
Abakan is great for dressmaking fabric. The Cottonpatch is better if you want some lovely co-ordinating, crafty fabrics.
bigmommasally
Oooo Lovely new machine - look forward to seeing what you make on it. Pollyanna Patchwork are now £7.50 a metre on all their cotton fabrics - good for basics. http://shop.pollyanna-patchwork.co.uk/fabrics-1-c.asp Doughty's have a good sale on at the moment - though I had trouble with my last order from them, they got the order completely wrong and overcharged me - also be aware that if you order a 1/4 metre from Doughty's it will be a long quarter not a fat quarter that then send. http://www.doughtysonline.co.uk/ My favourite on line supplier is Laughing hedghog - reasonable prices, free delivery and very very good service & fast delivery. http://www.laughinghedgehog.com/fabric.html

lillybettybabs
oo i'll have a look at those, I'm looking for a hard wearing material to make a rabbit bed. The ones i have bought so far must be made for toy rabbits as they only last two days at most.

Ikea fabric is good value and often sturdy cotton. Also, look for fabric remnant buckets in places which do home furnishings, such as Laura Ashley. Also, while you are practising, buy some sheets/duvets/curtains from the charity shops so any "mistakes" you make are not costly ones My mother bought me a sewing machine for my 18th birthday, a hand machine, not electric. I had enormous fun making soft furnishing and clothing with that machine. Fast forward to when my middle son, his g/f and newborn moved into their first flat. I'd upgraded to a Husqvana and decided to pass on the one my mother had given me years before. Son's g/f looked at it and went Oops! My bad!! Griffin
I made a cat nip toy Chandler played with it for 30 seconds then got bored so Rosie took over and she's carrying it around in her mouth singing to it
Olly
I was going to add that I buy Ikea sheets for e.g. lining things (I made some shoe bags at Christmas) - it's much the cheapest way to get a large piece of plain material if you need linings/backings, they can be a bit on the thin side but there's a great range of colours. I also haunt the remnant section at John Lewis, and charity shops, it's surprising what you can find.
