ClaireG
Does anyone know anything about car stereos? Due to a serious crankshaft problem with the car i had, i've had to get a new to me old car! It has a radio cassette in it which power seems to go to but no sound comes out. Does anyone know if it's likely to be a broken stereo, something to do with the speakers or the wiring? Any easy way of me telling? I want to get a new stereo soon but would like to have a slight clue incase Halfords tell me it needs new wiring etc and it doesn't. The Dogmother
Could be any of those TBH, and hard to tell without it being tested for power and all the connections. It may also be that it's an old stereo (perhaps original to the car) which was taken out by the previous owner so they could install a better one, then popped back in again - without much care to the wiring - to sell to you. Halfords are generally pretty straight, but if you're prepared to get over here then I know of a very good independent mechanic, who will give you a brutally honest opinion; just let me know. Cinnamon
The only thing I can think of is if it is a CD or cassette player, then you should be able to tell if there is power going into the unit by hearing the mechanism moving the tape or CD,or by lights coming on. If that is so,& there is no sound, then its either the speakers that are broken, the wiring to the speakers or possibly the volume switch. Either way,a cassette player is pretty outdated now,so maybe you should treat your new old car to something like a CD or an MP3 player? ClaireG
Thanks ladies I might just pop along to Halfords and ask sometime soon. If i have any problems i'll let you know Clare Cinnamon that's what i plan on doing! Halfords are doing free fitting on DABs at the moment. I have no cassettes to try! When you turn the radio on though it displays the station and will also change stations etc, just no sound
ClaireG
Decided to investigate a bit further myself and found a complete mess of wires. Popped to Halfords and asked a chap if he'd have a look. Good news is that it is possible to fit one but i will need to go to a bigger store and also will have to pay more for fitting as more work is needed.
