Mycoplasma

Recommended Posts

I've noticed a lot of posts about hens with suspected mycoplasma. I have a chicken that showed signs of this a couple of days after I got her. The chicken will be wheezy, sneezing and have a foamy eye that is often stuck shut in the morning. She will also be lethargic and out of sorts. Many comments have vets recommending Baytril as 'the' remedy. Luckily I have access to a specialist Avian vet who is excellent. After discussion he administered a Baytril injection - I agreed to this (which is the cheaper and more well known option) but advised that a quarter of chickens do not respond to it. My chicken did not respond to this treatment and the vet then prescribed Tylan Soluble which is an antibiotic powder added to water (so it treats/protects all who have it). It is more expensive - £40 for a tub - but you need a tiny amount so that tub will probably last you the life of your chickens. It can be used to treat chickens with bad colds in winter too, just don't overdo dosing them.

I just want owners to be aware that Baytril is not the only option, and if you can get a vet who has specialist poultry knowledge then head for them not a standard practice.

Denegard is a very good antibiotic for respiratory problems too

Unless you have a lot of chickens (and taking in to account the issue mentioned by Egluntyne above) a tub of tylan is an awful lot- the vet could have prescribed less or a small amount of Denegard liquid

Yes of course I wouldn't dose up my birds unless I'd seen the vet but I don't have to purchase more expensive drugs (and we all know vets bills!), but it's just that I see so many posts about Baytril for Myco and it doesn't always work. There are other options, including Denegard.

I think the main thing is that it's important to find a vet who has good poultry knowledge. Our vet for our dogs does not have a clue about poultry (and said so) but did point me in the direction of the Avian vet I now use. !egggreen!

Milly is looking a whole lot better now (except she has started to moult - wonderful timing!) and was surprisingly good at letting us administer eye drops. The vet thinks she will have a 'grumbling recurrence' of Myco every year and so we have some treatments in ready and some excellent advice for when the first signs strike.
