chickenopolis Posted February 26, 2012 Share Posted February 26, 2012 We bought Flo (and her sister Gloria who sadly died last year) in July 2009 when she was 6 months old from Omlet. By my reckoning, Flo is now 3 - is that old for a ? She stopped laying eggs about 12 months ago, well she was never that good at it in the first instance. She has laid several lashes since. She has had 2 moults and has come out of them ok. Her voice is now a tad squeaky, but very cute. But apart from that she does everything my other ladies do - dustbath, running for grapes and sultanas and as I type now she is sitting in the middle of her dustbath with one wing in the air sunbathing. I've had four over the years, and none has lived beyond that age - every hen is different, of course, but the price for being reliable and consistent egg-layers is that they tend to get worn out by the time they are two or so. The fact that she seems to have retired from laying quite early may mean that she has a longer life. Sounds as if she's enjoying herself, anyway! Leicester_H Posted February 26, 2012 Share Posted February 26, 2012 We got Boo ( from Omlet) on 5th April 2007 - she's been a bit slow on cold days - but still jumps for treats (I try to stop her jumping but she takes no notice!). mabelandflosmum Posted February 26, 2012 Share Posted February 26, 2012 I had 2 GNRs 4 years ago, I lost Mabel at 3 and a half but still have Flo. She had a setback after Mabel died and had a serious moult and stopped laying.However now she has settled down with her new young chicken friends she is back to top health, laying every day (a double yolker today!) and definitely top chook!
