stephaniebrown
Our last original omlet girl seems to be on her last legs, her health seems to have worsened over the last few months i think due to getting older (even though shes about 2 and a half) I think it started when we had the recent cold snap/snow a few weeks ago, and It seems that she has developed frostbit or what looks like it. I noticed it a while ago but back then her feet were just pinkish/normal and I didn't think anything of it, but now her feet are are very dark red/black, they seemed to have shriveled up and there is no movement at all e.g. when walking (which isn't much) she just sorts of waddles from side to side. she doesn't scratch, and roosting is a large problem as she can't walk up the ladder to the cube. I'm planning on taking her to the vets tomorrow to see if she has frostbite. And it may lead to having her put down, as her quality of life is my main concern. I was just wondering if anyone has had this problem before with a hen and what they did? e.g. had her put down and any tips, or advice would be very helpful, thank you
The Dogmother
Never heard of this problem myself, not even in the most severe of winters; I can only guess that she has some underlying problem that the vet may be able to identify... good luck
stephaniebrown
thanks, we took her to vet and it turns out it is frost bite!? We think shes being sleeping out side the cube as the last few nights we checked on her we have found her outside, but lucky the vet said that its she can live with it, and gave her some antibiotics in case it gets infected, poor girl.. but at least she doesn't have to put down

Ain't Nobody Here
Wow, I've never heard of that before . Whereabouts in the country are you? Many of us have hens that sleep outdoors in all weathers and so far, "Ooops, word censored!"ody has posted about frostbite. Great news that she can live with it . Welcome to the forum, by the way . Daphne
I'ver never heard of this either, but very glad to hear she can get on with her life I have either read or heard that chooks have no/very little feeling in their feet so presumably she didn't realise she was cold and what was happening.
