Embilly
Hello all, Since yesterday there has been a very tame wood pigeon in the garden. It seems to have spent thd night asleep in the garden chair. This morning I've had a closer look and it's middle toe on each foot is very big/swollen/deformed. Although it doesnt seem ill of disressed a google search says this could be streptococcus. I have kept the chickens in their run so far today. And am hoping to find a rescue centre to take the pigeon to, but should I be concerned about the hens catching anything from it? Thanks
Plum
If it's a bacterial infection it could enter through an open wound but fresh air will kill it. If in doubt I'd perhaps disinfect the area its been sleeping in.
ohcarolina
A number of my local vets will take in injured wild animals. They don't just PTS but give initial treatment and pass on to sanctuarys. Their way of giving back.
chickweed
Wood pigeons are very shy birds, so would normally fly away at the approach of a human. It is obviously a very poorly bird. I found one that had had its crop ripped open and my local vets dealt with it. I am not keen on pigeons but I would not wish to see one suffer. Embilly
Thanks All, I found a local rescue centre, but when I picked it up, it flew straight out of my hands - its flying is OK when it wants to! If it returns over night (as it has done the past few days) I'll try again and take it along to be cared for! I sprayed some antibacterial and let the chickens out - so hopefully there's nothing catching.
