daxigirl Posted March 19, 2012 Share Posted March 19, 2012 (edited) So a couple of weeks ago I was on hol from work, you know the type where you have lots on the to do list but don't actually do, I put up a sign to say eggs available at the gate. The girls were getting in the swing of laying again and not being at work I had rather a lot. This gentleman knocked at the door and had 6, they're not exactly free range are they? I don't normally buy eggs like this, he quipped. I explained that I didn't normally sell them at the gate as I had frequent buyers at work and didn't need to. Needless to say a couple of days later he was back again for another 6. Then the following Sunday he came wanting 12 but cleared me out of big girl eggs by taking 18. Yesterday he came again wanting a dozen but I only had 6, I didn't say there were some more for people at work who had requested them special. His parting words were, can I have 2 dozen next week? OMG I appear to have created an egg pest. My mum is convinced he's selling them on. He told me he and his wife eat 3 each for breakfast. Anybody else have this trouble? heth1986 Posted March 19, 2012 Share Posted March 19, 2012 My auntie had a similar problem, she keeps about 50 hens free ranging at her farm and sells the eggs at the gate in view of the happy chooks which people seem to love. She has lots of regular customers and it seems to tick over quite nicely with a good balance of eggs:customers. BUT her regulars began knocking on her door asking when she was putting the eggs out (which, of course, she already had but they were all gone by 8 am!). After a few days of spying, she discovered that a gent was coming along first thing and cleaning her out! Turns out that yes, he was selling them on at his farm shop and she had to politely ask him to stop buying her eggs so that her regular customers didn't have to go to the battery farm further down the road. Needless to say, in true chook mummy form, Auntie has now purchased lots and lots more layers, the farm shop man has his own flock of eggs every morning and between them they are turning over a nice little business . I have just bought some Cuckoo Marans, Goldlegbar & some Legauna eggs for the inccy to inject a bit of colour next year. The Marans & Legbars are hopefully easy to sex at day old. daxigirl Posted March 20, 2012 Author Share Posted March 20, 2012 The Marans & Legbars came from Salisbury Auction and the Legaunas came from Jackie near Wickham (keeps pigs and all sorts). I wanted Exchequer but she didn't have any and the auction ones hadn't been there so got 6 to top the inncy up. They were all big eggs and only just fit in, it was like a puzzle. miller30 Posted March 20, 2012 Share Posted March 20, 2012 Yep thats her jackie hunt she gives me my turkey eggs and we split what hatches we ate the turkeys for christmas dinner i hatched 4 we had 2 and jackie had 2 for her family if i get loads of broodies i hatch babies out for jackie and give her them back at about 8 weeks old did you meet harry plopper and spider pig her kune kune pigs i can now even cull my own birds as i got jackie to show me how as my husband wont do it and i got fed up with him telling me if you hatch birds out blah blah blah i should beable to cull them when i need to most of my girls in the garden are from eggs of jackie you will have to walk round and meet them all one day if you like leanne Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
