We have candled the eggs DD boyfriend helped as he knows about these things but by the time we had done some I knew what I was looking for too.

 

It is amazing, I still can't believe that the eggs we brought home just over a week ago now has a little life in it I know don't laugh at me

 

Well we had 28 bantam eggs we now have 22, 3 of which we are unsure of due to their dark shells. Of the 6 which were no good 5 were not fertile and one had grown but died.

 

I am really after the blip with the temperature I was so worried we wouldn't have any, I know things can still go wrong but at least we have got this far.

 

Should we candle them again, if so when?

I candle again before the end to take out any who die inbetween, usually around day 18.

I agree with Griffin, candle again at 18 days when you stop the egg turning

 

I find that the dark ones are easier to see inside then as the light/dark contrast is better but if you are still unsure then leave them in, they wont do any harm provided they dont smell and arent weeping

Apart from one strange hatch where the eggs hatched at 16 days I havent had a bantam hatch before 21 days so I'd stop turning at 18 days

Ok day 18 it is then I just read 15 on the info at the top of the forum.

 

When I stop turning the octagon I fill the water reserviors do I need to do anything else, somewhere I read about putting marbles in, do I need to do this? Then I do not open the incy to keep the humidity up. Will the water last or will it need topping up?

I've had a LF Ancona hatch at 17 days, Tiger tends to cook hers for 20 days, but generally LF & bantams hatch for me on day 20 or 21. I don't stop turning until day 18.

When you stop turning the eggs, fill the reservoirs and close the vent to about half way, and remove the egg dividers. Keep an eye on the humidity - I kept mine to about 45 - 50% as much as was possible.

The marbles are to put in the chicks' drinker, to prevent drowning, or you can just get a special drinker for them, with a thin lip.

My eggs were all bantams, and didn't hatch til day 20 and 21.

Sorry another question.

 

When I candle them tomorrow on day 18 and take out the egg dividers do I still try to get them to go point down or on their sides, I am worried that they will roll and crack

Switch the turner off or remove the inccy from the cradle (if there is one)

 

then take the dividers out and lay the eggs down as long as there is room

 

The first chick to hatch will rattle the other eggs around something chronic but sit on you hands and dont open the lid, they will all be just fine
