Birdline - anyone fostered?

Recommended Posts

Its been a difficult two weeks, I lost my precious boy Boris (blue fronted amazon) due to cancer it now appears. I have got him back now after the PM and cremated. I cant believe how hard it has been :(

I have registered with bird line to foster and possibly safe house another parrot http://www.parrot-rescue.org.uk/portalid/0/Home/tabid/36/Default.aspx

Has anyone had experience with them and have any useful information on their findings.

I was looking at getting a baby parrot but i would much rather look after a homeless parrot parrot who is desperate for someone to care for it.

Boris below made into devil-style parrot with feathery horns

I'm sorry to hear your bad news :( I don;t know anything about parrots but he looked like a very cheeky boy :D I sometimes see white birds (cockatiels?) in the pet shop where I buy my cat stuff and I spend a bit of time talking to them - you get a bit more sense than you do out of a chicken :D

I think fostering any bird or animal is a great thing to do; its something I am seriously considering, good luck in your quest for a new parrot to give a safe and loving home to 8)

All pets are a sad loss - sorry to hear about Boris!

But good that you are considering homing one that needs someone to love!

I do like parrots and always visit them at pet shops, but have been put off having one in the past by a vicsious one owned by a relative years ago!

I have the doglet now anyway!

Update....

I didnt get the boy I had applied for but to cut a long story short I am going be a parrot foster parent soon. Sounds silly but I cant name who i am fostering but just incase there is a member on here i want to keep within the rules of Birdline....

But all very exciting - not sure when the fostering will commence but I cannot wait

Good luck with the foster parenting, sounds exciting!

I too have gone into birds more after getting chickens (mind you, DH would say I'm into everything, feathery, furry or scaly, and he'd be right), unfortunately we cant have parrots or cockatiels or parakeets... We had them a few years back, and DH got psitacosis fromm them and ended up in hospital with pneumonia... :( ... Two of our birds died and the third was put down, it was so heartbreaking, as they were such friendly tame birds...

Looking forward to reading news of your fostering.... :D

Jamie - Blue Fronted Amazon

New foster babies have been here almost a week! House feels complete again

I collected them Sunday a 6 1/2 hour round trip, on the way home we enjoyed a bit of queen and we were all singing OH included

After such a long day the boys enjoyed a tea of rice, spaghetti, cooked green beans, carrot and tomato with a little passatta

They have been on the rehoming list (18 months and 15 months respectfully) so i am really please I was the lucky person that BL felt I could care for them how they need to be.

Woody has been making some chicken noises so i think he will be interesting the in the 'girls' when they eventually get to go out in the garden pending how soon we get our summer!

Jamie has started showing interest in the toys and been making wood piles at the bottom of the cage so will have to look at getting more already! Woody is a bit of bully, doesnt seem too bothered about me, but will have tickle in the cage out but soon gets bored and prefers my OH. Jamie has flown at and gave OH a nip - Just like having Boris back must be something with BFAs and my partner LOL....

It is still very early days and i think they have a lot of potential to come on, they dont like stepping up on your hand and will try and bite but I think they will get there just up to them how soon that happens

Hi Gertie

Thank you - I am still really upset about boris, as one of the boys are a blue fronted Amazon he has traits like Boris and makes me feel a bit sad that he isnt like him in other ways, BUT he is his own self and just needs to build his confidence :)

They are basically adopted. The birds belong to Birdline, so they would never be mine as such but i am totally responsible for them. Safe housing is where you look after a bird until a home is found for them (intermediate home) and fostering is where you keep them until the end of their days, but they call it fostering but it is a life long thing - if you look after them properly.

I would reccommend it to anyone, but you have to be prepared that the birds come into the charity for various reasons and may need a lot of work to get them to trust you etc. With these boys they have been on the list for over a year and did have a few applications to foster them but havent been sucessful as they require experienced handler.

Wasnt a short process, I registered with BL on 18th March and I collected them last weekend, but it was worth it and one of them had a sad story :( - not sure on the history of the other.

I have offered to Safe House also as i know they are desperate for houses. Recently they had a call that someone had died in their home and hadnt been found for a few days and there was a parrot that needed to be collected desperately - it had been left for days without fresh food or water as the deceased owner had no friends or family, must have been very traumatic for the poor bird.

If anyone wants to ask any questions if they fancy fostering or safehousing i will assist as much as i can :)

will post up some more pics and updates on the boys

This sounds so exciting! I adore parrots and I am sure in the right homes they make amazing pets - but I guess that is often the problem, that homes are not suitable? I guess that, being so intelligent, they require a home that offers them sufficient activity and stimulation to prevent them from becoming bored? I certainly hate to see them just shut in a cage all day, but then I am generally not a fan of caged birds anyway.

I am sure your new arrivals will soon settle down and bond with you. Please keep this thread updated Sammiboo, as I would love to learn more about these gorgeous birds.

You sound like a very committed owner Sammiboo. I think your new boys are very lucky to have landed with someone who sounds so passionate. I can imagine it must be quite hard to find experienced foster carers.

That sounds very sad about the parrot whose owner died. I hope he is recovering ok from his ordeal. I can imagine you need to have a lot of knowledge to keep such an intelligent creature well adjusted. I don't know anything about birds in general. Although I have hens and follow all the advice and good husbandry I still have regular disasters!

Looking forward to hearing about how they are gaining confidence as the weeks go by.
