beccauk
Hi I have 3 amber links and just want to check whther i should be doing anything really, 1 of my hens started laying and i got 1 egg for 6 days, then my 2nd hen i think came into lay as i got 2 eggs then for 3 days. on thursday i got 1 good shelled egg and 1 soft shelled egg i left it in the dropping tray as was cleaning them out the following morning, to find in the morning i got 1 good shelled egg and another 3 soft shelled eggs which is showen in the picture. This morning i got 1 good shelled egg and 2 more soft shelled eggs. They have been layed on the roosting bars and dropped through i think havent found any in the nest box only the good eggs. They have grit and shell and are eating well i am not sure if its their diet as i am getting a good egg. Im not sure if its just the 2nd hen that has started laying soft shelled eggs after laying good shelled eggs. The 3rd hen i dont t hink has come into lay yet as its comb hasnt fully grown like the other two yet. I would be grateful for any advise. scubababe
Have a check on their food that it's not stale or out of date. Spinach leaves are a good remedy as is adding ground, baked egg shells into their food. Soft shells are normally a sign of calcium deficiency. Someone on here has also recommended limestone flour from pet shops. Good luck & I hope you get it sorted.
beccauk
The layers pellet is only 3 weeks old and they have grit and oyster shell. they have been eating apples, sweet corn they do anything for, rice, cauil greens, scratching for worms while we were doing the gardening. This morning i havent got any eggs yet, i was told they they will lay soft shelled when they first start laying this is the first i have had after having good shelled eggs. Many thanks Becca
percy049
When hens first come into lay a few of their eggs are normally soft shelled as they are getting into the routine of laying eggs. The longest I have soft shelled eggs for is about 2 weeks. Our POL hen laid proper shelled eggs with double yolks for a week, then laid softies for 2 weeks, then was normal. Any longer than about 2 weeks there may be a problem. You should take out soft shelled eggs as soon as possible as these can start to go off and encourage egg eating. This can also attract vermin, so put it straight in the bin. As scubababe said you could add eggshells do their food. Make sure they aren't having too many treats, and have them in the evening so they fill up on pellets. I hope this helps and you get good-shelled eggs soon
libby22
I have had the same trouble with one of my girls who is just 24 weeks old. She was laying well for three weeks and then the soft shelled eggs began. She was off her food and water so took her to the vet to be checked. He advised the usual of allowing them to eat their daily amount of pellets before any treats however, to ensure that afternoon food included a good supply of greens and as scubababe says, to include spinach. I have done this for three days and today she is back to laying a normal shelled egg. Fingers crossed she keeps up the good work
